The Story.
Action at a Distance (as a band) was formed in 2006 after a long and complex history of previous bands and solo projects being established and developed. It's kind of like Darwinism gone completely silly, but an attempt will be made here at mapping out the highs, the lows, the confusion and the determination involved.
Phase 1:
In 1997, three young lads from Stavanger, Norway, decided that it was time to form a band. Andreas, Jørn and Alexander formed Overfloater and released the ep "Drown" as a self-financed project. The band played a whole bunch of gigs in support of the release before Alexander left the band to form Myriads.
Andreas and Jørn ploughed on, recording a full length album named "SugarCoatedCandyMountains". The title was an ironic response to those arguing that the cover art for "Drown" was too dark. Some even believed that the band members were part of the anti-abortion pack, which is not the case at all. However, we have come to the conclusion that the cover art could very well be misinterpreted. Luckily we only had to put out a few fires.
SugarCoated only received an internet release, and the band gradually stopped touring due to problems finding someone to fill Alexander's shoes and the fact that Andreas eventually decided to move to another city.
The band also had one of their songs included on a compilation album called Genetic Mutations (vol.1) released by Die Heilige Musikgeshellchaft (or something like that). The label messed up the info booklet, and got the song order wrong. Some people probably still believe that we played Italian punk rock. Despite promises from the label to make up for the error, no efforts were made to actually do something about it.
The Overfloater website is still availible to explore (although no longer updated), and can be found here.
Overfloater changed their name to ThisMachine for a short while, but soon decided to put the project on hold.
Phase 2
Around year 2000 Andreas was living in Bergen, Norway where he met Bjørn and Martin. The lads decided to form a band with the intention of playing experimental music.
They formed J, and alcohol fueled recording sessions of the ad hoc kind soon followed. A limited edition album called "Fizzics Wurk Shoap" was released. The album is of a highly experimental character, featuring only instrumental tracks. Song titles include "I flirted with satanism, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt" and "Psychedelic butterfly vibrations". For some reason the majority of the copies made were picked up by philosophy students.
Phase 3
2003: Andreas moved to Glasgow - Scotland and started recording songs on his own. In 2004 he met a guy called Simon, and they started working on a project that they named The Black Amnesias. The songs were released on the internet, and can now be downloaded from this very website.
Phase 4
Andreas moved back to Stavanger in 2004 and hooked up with Jørn and Bjørn. Together with keyboardist Eirik they formed Hospitalville. At the same time, Andreas established Action at a Distance as a solo project. With Action generating considerable interest on myspace, the lads decided to drop Hospitalville and collectively focus on Action at a Distance instead.
The band sees the musicians returning to the live scene and recording new music.
Other projects
Andreas posts new solo recordings here. Eirik has played in the band Owl (as well as other projects), and now also does the solo thing in his own musical playground, Alucoland. Bjørn and Andreas are occasionally working toghether on the project Annual Report. And for the wisdom of Jørn, click here.
